In 2000, there were 46,788 international students from 147 different countries that came to study in China at their own expense, which is 18.45℅ larger than than 1999.

Among which the number of long-term study students was 30,309, and short-term study program students was 16,479.

There were 10,659 international students studying in China for a degree, including 663 for a Doctorate degree, 1,288 for Master's degree, 8,480 for Bachelor's degree and 228 for a diploma. At that time there were 274 advanced visiting scholars, and 19,376 academics in China.
