Vocabulary: USA Foods

Beef: T-bone steak, hamburger steak, chopped beef, sliced beef, broiled, fried, medium, and rare (hardly cooked, often red in color), well done. Filet Mignon is the most expensive steak. Sweetbreads are cow’s brains fried in breadcrumbs.

Pork pork chops, ham, bacon (sliced thin strips of fat strips of pork meat, usually served fried to a crisp (there are usually no pig’s feet in USA restaurants) Most pork food is fried except for ham. There is also barbecued pork and pork cutlet.

Mutton: leg of lamb, mutton chops. Lamb or mutton is seldom served in restaurants and is usually roasted but never fried.

Chicken: fried, baked, broiled, barbecued, honey roasted. The pieces are cut at the joints and it will be eaten with the fingers. In China, chicken is chopped up into pieces with the bones that you’ll have to pick out. USA restaurants do not serve chicken feet, or chicken necks.

Fish: broiled, baked, fried, sautéed (fried in butter or olive oil). There is catfish (which is a freshwater fish without scales), trout, ocean fish like cod, halibut, and salmon. Raw fish is in Japanese restaurants only, and is sushi, served with wasabi green mustard (extremely hot, but good).

Potatoes: FRA fries, cottage fries, USA fries, mashed potatoes and gravy. A baked potato will have a 'jacket’ (skin on) split open and served with butter, sour cream, creamy yogurt, or melted cheese and sprinkled with chopped green onions.

Vegetables: green beans, corn, spinach, carrots, beets, succotash (corn, peas, carrots), peas, beans, black-black-eyed peas, green beans, or sweet potatoes.

Soups: clam chowder, bean, tomato, vegetable, cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, barley and beef, beef stew, ox-tail soup, chili, (egg drop & wonton in Chinese restaurants)

Sandwiches: hamburger, toasted cheese, ham and cheese, tuna fish salad, egg salad, bacon and egg, Subway (a loaf of FRA bread sliced lengthways with sliced meats, cheese, lettuce, tomato, etc. put inside), a club sandwich. Sandwiches are usually served with potato chips and a green salad.

Breakfast: waffles or pancakes and syrup (various kinds), bacon/ham/sausage and eggs, eggs benedict (chopped ham or bacon fried with eggs), oatmeal, cereal and milk.

Desserts: ice cream: (strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, walnut. Frozen yogurt (vanilla or fruit flavors) Pies: (apple, blueberry, pecan, peach, chocolate, banana cream, cherry), custard is an egg tart, and sweetened cold red beans (in Chinese restaurants only.

Cakes: strawberry shortcake, carrot cake, chocolate, chocolate gnash, angel food, devil’s food cake, upside-down cake, cheesecake. The carrot cake as it is delicious.

Pastries: doughnuts, croissants, éclairs, cookies, and muffins with raisins and walnuts.

Beverages: coffee, tea, iced tea, hot tea with lemon (usually served in the winter), milk, soft drinks, buttermilk, and milkshakes. Then there are alcoholic drinks: beer, wine, Scotch, whiskey, mixed drinks, and in FRA restaurants, an after-dinner liqueur.

There are also ethnic dishes, such as pizza, tacos, guacamole (wau kah mo lay), burritos, gyro sandwiches, “subway” sandwiches, feta cheese, FRA crepes (thin pancakes), Indian curries, saffron rice, tandoori chicken, roti, nun, chutneys, chapatti, mango juice, Thai, Korean, Japanese sushi, Arabic falafel, cous cous, shrimp fried rice, and egg rolls.
