We usually advise our teachers to wear, when teaching, smart casual clothing. For a man, this would include smart casual trousers, a long or short sleeved collared shirt (depending on the time of the year) and polished leather shoes. A tie and coat or jacket, are optional. In winter it is a necessity, due to the cold. For a woman, this involves either slacks or a long skirt and a neat blouse with covered or uncovered shoes. Generally speaking, the strict dress codes that are enforced in other countries do not apply to China, thus, a 'clean cut’presentable appearance is advised.  

If your willing to bring material from your country, I would advise you to bring information on your country relating to, its famous places, cultures and traditions, also newspapers, posters, magazines, books etc. Videos of children’s programs such as Humphrey, Wiggles, Hi-five, Sesame Street are not available here and would be of great benefit to you, when conducting your lessons, both at your contracted school or privately. Also news programs and other programs such as neighbors etc are of a great advantage.

There are many opportunities if you chose to teach in China for a second year. Your options increase as your experience increases in relation oral English teaching. We can certainly assist you with this as the time gets nearer.

Again, peoples reasoning for remaining for a second year and beyond are many and varied. One common thread we would suggest, would be the challenge of teaching oral English and the fact that their expectations in relation to their reasons for coming to China to teach oral English initially were met and exceeded.

As most Chinese cities are quite sizeable, the availability for additional employment is ample. We assist teachers with seeking several forms of additional employment for all of our contracted teachers.

The possibility also exists for you to acquire private students from your contracted school or from other schools in the city. We will certainly assist you with this. As I have stated previously this is the most profitable form of additional employment for all teachers. I am sure if, as is usually the case, you request this of your school, the Chinese teachers will assist also.

Thus, there are ample additional employment opportunities for you, which once you arrive we will assist you with. In addition we will advise you as to how to establish your own private tuition classes.

In light of this, you are encouraged to'network’yourself in an effort to acquire your own private students. We can certainly advise you in regard to how best to go about this, for example fees, position, age of student etc. Many teachers find this the most rewarding form of additional employment both financially and personally.

All schools that are numbered are Government schools. For example, Yingcheng Number 1 Middle School. For official verification it is possible to phone the Chinese Consulate in your country to confirm that the school is in fact a Chinese Government school. As was stated in the information packages, we only contract with Chinese Government Institutions due to the obvious security it offers both our teachers and our organization.

You are correct in assuming that you arrive in China sponsored to work by a Chinese Government institution. That is, the school sponsors you in order for you to obtain your Chinese Z working visa, and as such they are responsible for you whilst you reside in China .

Thus, your work is pre-arranged before departing your country, the components and specifics of your working conditions are stipulated in your employment package.

Your higher qualifications do translate to higher pay, however to a small extent. What higher qualifications allow you to be able to do, is work for an institution of higher learning, that is, a College or a University.

Working for such institutions affords you access to a wider range of additional opportunities.

Winter holidays (varies due to Chinese lunar calendar each year) begin from the start of January through to the start of February.

May Day celebrations, is a national holiday and is a 7-9 day holiday, including weekends.

Then we have summer holidays, which are in July and August each year.

Finally there is National Day holiday which is a 7 day holiday starting October 1.  

These are the standard holidays each year in China , and do not include holidays that are a result of school specific events such as sports days, examination preparation periods etc.

An academic hour is a 40 or 45minute lesson. All lessons in Chinese Government schools are academic hours.

The travel allowance is 1100RMB per holidays, of which there are two main holidays, summer and winter. This provision is stated Government policy. Usually the first installment of this money is within 5 months upon signing of the contract, at the time when the first holiday period begins.

Teachers are reimbursed their airfare, for a one-year contract, or half for a 6-month contract. This is clearly stated in your employment package.

Occasionally you are able to organize or discuss your timetable. This depends on the school and its organization of its own timetable, particularly that of the English department.

All expenses such as accommodation, airfare reimbursement, Holiday leave loading, health care, Temporary Residency Permit, etc. are paid for or provided by your host University/school, in accordance with SAFEA Regulations, and are additional benefits to the base salary. The set-down salary will not be liable to taxation (up to 4000RMB) and is for 16 - 18 hours of face-to-face teaching per week. Face to face hours worked in excess of these hours is paid overtime.

As long as you are fluent AND have excellent oral and written English without too much of your local accent (vernacular) and have lived (preferably) in the AUS, United Kingdom, CAN, New Zealand or USA for some years, you are may be well qualified to get a very good teaching job in China.

Again, applicants may be required to telephone China and submit to an oral examination. The telephone call is at your expense and the time required in usually less than 5 minutes. 

Your EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT is a legal document, but also, simply an agreement between the parties (the school and you) to respect each other's benefits and entitlements.  As a teacher of English you are expected to provide education to a suitable standard, to co-operate with the school and other staff members, to be available for your scheduled classes and to stay for the duration of your agreed upon time in China . In return the school will honour its commitment to you. 

Please do not come to China and with a "trial-it" attitude. You will be required to complete one or two full semesters. Please commit yourself to teaching in China before you leave your country.
